Heres and interesting quote from Steve Smith (Red Green) at the 2003 IPTV pledge-a-thon during the US premiere of "Duct Tape Forever" on Iowa Public Television:
"You know, once in while somebody will come up to me and say, 'Ya know, your TV show is kinda goofy.' Actually, I take that as a compliment. Now I don't mind them callin it goofy or silly, I mean I don't like it when they call it stupid, ya know, that bothers me a little, but actually ya know somethin? I never had anybody smart tell me it was a stupid show. I don't mind goofy, I think that goofy's good. Goofy just means we're a bunch of guys foolin around, probably tryin stuff that we shouldn't try, but mainly we're not takin ourselves too seriously. See, there are very few times in a man's life when he should take himself seriously. Just like when you're havin a one-on-one with your boss, or your wife, or a police officer, that's about it. Other than that, ya know, we all need to lighten up. Cause when we start tellin people the best way to drive to the cottage, or how to wallpaper the living room, or that eatin tree bark will prevent root rot, I mean, nobody wants to be around us. We need to be reminded not to take ourselves seriously and I think that's kinda what my show does. Now maybe for you once a week is enough, some of you might need a daily reminder - that's between you and your PBS programmer. Here's the sad thing: Most the people who don't watch my show are the ones who need it the most. So now, if you happen to be one of those odd bunch that likes the Red Green Show and the Possum Lodge stuff I need you to do a little bit of missionary work for me here tonight. I need ya to call in, make a pledge, call that number at the bottom of the screen, so that goofy shows like mine get a chance to be on the air where they can be seen by boring, stodgy people who may eventually evolve into fully rounded human beings. Could you do that for me? 'Cause if together we can get people not to take themselves so seriously, we won't just be saving TV shows, we'll be saving marriages."

At this great site here made by a fan Red talks about his first season and episodes “It was called ‘The Winter of our Discount Tent.’ I remember doing a scene where I was sitting out in the woods reading poetry and thinking that we had absolutely NO idea what we were doing. I honestly thought we would last one season, the fact that it’s kept going this long is a wonderful surprise.”
